Anthony Wayne Spirit of Giving - Part 1

Troop 10931 was first introduced to the Anthony Wayne Spirit of Giving (http://awspiritofgiving.org/index-3.html) organization last winter. We were working on our Agent of Change journey and needed to volunteer for a local organization. AWSOG was the perfect example of what we had learned in our Agent of Change journey. The organization was started by one person at Anthony Wayne high school who wanted to help a teacher in needed. This led to a group of teacher organizing a fund raiser for this one family. It was such a huge success, the father of the family they assisted wanted to help another family in our community and the organization was born. The Anthony Wayne community coming together to help our own. The girls learned it only take one person to have an impact on such a larger scale. This has special meaning to our troop because the mom of one the scouts was an original founder of the SOG and the family of one of our former scouts was a beneficiary.

As the girls started the 2011-2012 scout year, we needed to find a community project to fulfill the requirements of our bronze award. The girls decided work with the SOG organization in several projects. The first was making blankets for the sick kids at St. Vincent's hospital. Monies earned from our cookie sale was used to purchase the materials needed to make 8 blankets.
On a November night we dedicated meeting time to start making the blankets. We used three large tables and worked as a team to finish each blanket together. That night we finished 5 of the blankets. Abbie took two blankets and Sarah took the final blanket to finish them at home. As you can see by the photo below, the blankets are huge!!
